Vacant Property Indicators - A model developed by OIT in collaboration with L+I, OPA and other city agencies to identify potentially vacant buildings and lots using existing city databases of permits, inspections, billing…paired with spatial data.

Building a Framework for Effective Community Schools – The Mayor’s Office of Education Community Schools Initiative is building a framework for meeting the needs of students, teachers, families, and communities in and around community schools. Our strategy combines solid academic theories, best practices from around the country, and smart approaches to the collection, management, and use of both geographic and non-geographic data.

Smart Policing – Philadelphia Police Department won a national award for its sophisticated use maps and data to improve public safety. Learn how PPD utilizes Geographic Information Systems, story mapping, and open data as a communication tool with the community.

Residential Structural Assessment -  Licenses + Inspections’ GIS team has mined its own data relating to permits, citizen complaints, and Property Maintenance Code violations and combined it with City geodata to prioritize potentially unsafe and dangerous residential buildings for inspections and demolition. The team is working with OIT to also spot and track unsafe conditions and holes in rooftops using LIDAR and aerial imagery, to identify potential property maintenance issues to supplement inspections.

From Street and Sky:  How Philly Changes – City's investments in custom street view imagery, years of aerial photography, new building footprints, and 3D models show how Philly’s built landscape changes from multiple and measurable perspectives. See how blocks might look at full zoning build out By Right.

Tracking Green Stormwater Investments - Philadelphia Water's applications for informing the public where Green Stormwater Infrastructure projects exist and where new investments are planned or underway.

Visualizing Flood Risk – Office of Sustainability seeks to help planners visualize potential flooding impacts to capital projects and help Philadelphia increase its resilience to sea level rise and storm surges impacting the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers.  OIT is collaborating with Sustainability on 3D visualizations to extend understanding of impacts.

By Deadly Design: Tobacco Industry in your Philly Neighborhood – The reality is that tobacco retail is targeted at the communities who can least afford its negative impacts on their health and wallets. Philadelphia Public Health Department spatially analyzes the issue at the neighborhood level.

Street Repair Planning + Coordination - The Guaranteed Pavement Information System (GPIS) is a web map application used by the Streets Department and external agencies to track underground utility work and internal Streets-related projects (e.g., Resurfacing). The application helps the City coordinate and manage the permit approval process as well as better coordinate potential scheduling conflicts of work amongst two or more conflicting parties.

Open Data: Where to Get It, How to Use It - The city of Philadelphia is a leader in releasing data for public use. The City publishes data in multiple formats to meet the needs of different skill levels and technology. Find data sets you can use for your work, research or school projects, or community advocacy.
